A wildfire in France. Another in Greece. Rivers in Europe are falling to levels that disrupt trade. A typhoon bringing floods to China. Forest fires spreading across Indonesia. And now, the haze is severe enough to close more than 100 schools in Malaysia.

At first glance, these may seem like separate stories. They are happening in different countries, under different conditions and with different immediate causes.

But taken together, they point to a question that deserves more attention. Are we becoming too comfortable treating extreme environmental events as isolated incidents?

The summer of 2026 has offered a striking reminder that climate-related risks do not arrive in one predictable form.

Sometimes they come from extreme heat and wildfires. Sometimes as a prolonged drought. Sometimes as intense storms and flooding. And sometimes, as Malaysia is experiencing now, they arrive as smoke carried across a national border.

The concern is not simply that these events are happening.

It is what happens when their consequences begin to compound.

When heat becomes more than heat

France is currently dealing with an unusually severe combination of heat, drought and wildfires.

On August 12, around 1,200 people were evacuated from a campsite as two wildfires spread near the country's northern coast. One fire was brought under control, while another continued to spread under unfavourable conditions.

The fires are only one part of France's wider problem.

The country's environment minister has estimated that recent heatwaves could cost between €10 billion and €15 billion in direct and indirect losses.

More than 40,000 people are facing water cuts as drought continues, while agriculture has suffered from the combination of heat and water shortages.

Greece is facing a similar challenge.

A new wildfire broke out southeast of Athens on August 10, forcing the evacuation of a nearby village.

It was the second major fire near the Greek capital this summer, following a blaze that destroyed more than 11,000 hectares of pine forest and farmland.

For Greece, the problem is becoming serious enough to affect long-term economic planning.

Government advisers now describe wildfires and heatwaves as a growing fiscal risk, with the country looking at investments in water, energy and tourism infrastructure to prepare for increasingly difficult conditions.

This is an important shift because a wildfire is no longer simply a firefighting problem.

It can become a problem for tourism, agriculture, public finances, insurance, water supplies and infrastructure.

The same is happening elsewhere in Europe.

The climate crisis does not always look like a disaster

Germany's Rhine River has fallen to record-low levels during prolonged dry weather.

At the Kaub chokepoint, water levels dropped so far that many vessels could no longer navigate normally. Ships had to carry lighter loads, while companies began moving goods by rail instead.

There are no flames in this story. There are no dramatic evacuation scenes. Yet the consequences are significant.

The Rhine is one of Europe's major commercial waterways. When it becomes too shallow for normal shipping, the disruption spreads to industries that depend on the river to transport raw materials.

Companies face higher costs, supply chains become more complicated and alternative transport has to be arranged.

This is what makes the current wave of extreme weather particularly concerning.

The consequences of environmental disruption can extend far beyond the place where the event begins.

The damage does not necessarily stop where the disaster begins

Heat can contribute to drought. Drought can worsen fire conditions. Fires can damage forests and farmland. Low water levels can disrupt transport. Disrupted transport can affect industries and supply chains. Agricultural losses can contribute to higher prices.

Governments then have to spend more money responding to emergencies and repairing infrastructure.

One environmental problem becomes an economic problem. The economic problem becomes a social problem.

The disaster may last days. Its consequences can last much longer.

And then the smoke crosses the border

Thousands of kilometres away, Southeast Asia is facing another side of the same challenge.

Indonesia is battling forest and land fires across six priority provinces.

More than 107,000 hectares of land were affected by fires between January and June this year, more than double the area recorded during the same period in 2023.

Authorities have deployed dozens of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to fight the fires and have attempted cloud seeding to encourage rainfall.

But the smoke does not stay in Indonesia. It has spread across the region, reaching Malaysia.

In Sarawak, 108 schools in Serian were closed after air quality deteriorated to unhealthy levels. The area's air quality index reached 198, while several other areas in the state also recorded unhealthy readings.

For many Malaysians, haze is familiar. We have seen it before. We know the routine. Check the air quality, limit outdoor activities, close schools when necessary and wait for the skies to clear.

But familiarity should not make the problem seem normal.

When air pollution becomes severe enough to disrupt education, affect public health and force communities indoors, it is no longer simply an inconvenience.

It is a reminder of how vulnerable we are to environmental problems that do not respect borders.

Malaysia cannot control every fire burning in Indonesia and Indonesia cannot control where the wind carries the smoke. That is precisely why haze is such an important warning.

The causes of an environmental problem can be local while its consequences are regional.

Indonesia's fires are influenced by human activity and land-use practices, while dry conditions and El Niño can create conditions that allow fires to spread more easily.

The response therefore cannot depend only on putting out fires after they start.

It requires prevention. It requires stronger protection of forests and peatlands, better monitoring, stronger enforcement against destructive burning and closer regional cooperation.

For Malaysia, that means recognising that haze preparedness cannot only begin when air quality reaches unhealthy levels.

By then, the smoke had already arrived.

The other side of the extreme

The picture becomes even broader when we look beyond fires and drought.

Typhoon Dolphin brought severe rainfall and flooding to parts of China, prompting large-scale evacuations and disrupting communities and infrastructure.

It is a reminder that climate risk is not simply about a hotter and drier world.

Extreme weather can take very different forms. But they all expose the same fundamental question.

How resilient are the systems we depend on when extreme conditions exceed what they were designed to handle?

A school has to decide whether it is safe for children to attend. A hospital has to prepare for more health emergencies. A farmer has to deal with unreliable water. A shipping company has to find another route. A government has to finance emergency responses while dealing with the economic losses caused by the disaster itself.

This is why climate change cannot remain only an environmental discussion.

It is increasingly a question of public health, education, infrastructure, food security, economic stability and governance.

Perhaps the biggest danger is not that one extraordinary disaster will suddenly appear.

It is that we become accustomed to a constant cycle of disruption.

There is a difference between responding to disasters and building resilience against them.

Emergency responses will always be necessary. Firefighters will always need to fight fires. Schools will sometimes need to close during hazardous haze. Communities will need evacuation plans.

But resilience means preparing for these risks before the next emergency arrives.

That means reducing the risk of fires before they start, strengthening cooperation when pollution crosses borders, designing infrastructure for more extreme weather conditions and preparing health systems for recurring periods of dangerous air quality.

It also means investing in prevention before the cost of responding becomes even greater.

Adaptation is expensive. But the cost of repeatedly responding to crises may be greater.

Malaysia should not wait until its own disruptions become more severe before moving.

The warning is already here

It is tempting to look at the headlines and see a collection of unrelated disasters.

France has wildfires. Greece has wildfires. Europe has a drought. China has floods. Indonesia has forest fires. Malaysia has haze.

But the more important story is what these events reveal about the world we are building.

Environmental disruptions are increasingly capable of becoming economic disruptions. Economic disruptions can become social disruptions. And problems that begin in one country can quickly become problems for another.

For Malaysia, the clearest example is hanging in the air right now.

The smoke from fires elsewhere has already reached our communities. Schools have already closed. Health authorities are already responding.

The haze will eventually clear. But clearing the smoke is not the same as solving the problem.

If we treat every haze episode as something to endure until it passes, we risk preparing only for the next emergency rather than the future that is producing them.

The warning signs are not predictions anymore. They are happening in forests, rivers, farms, cities and skies around the world. And for Malaysia, the most immediate reminder may be the simplest one.

The warning is already in the air.
