Penang International Airport’s recognition as Asia’s Small/Medium Airport of the Year marks a significant milestone for the state, as growing passenger traffic and ongoing infrastructure upgrades strengthen Penang’s position as a regional tourism and high-value manufacturing hub.
The airport received the award from the Centre for Aviation (CAPA) at the CAPA Asia and Environmental Sustainability Awards for Excellence in Chitose, Hokkaido, Japan, on October 1, recognising its operational performance, passenger services and contribution to regional economic growth.
In its citation, CAPA highlighted the airport’s ability to accommodate rapid traffic growth while maintaining high standards of customer service and operational efficiency.
It also recognised Penang International Airport as Malaysia’s second-largest gateway and a critical logistics hub for the region’s electronics and semiconductor industries.
The award comes amid rising demand for air connectivity, with the airport handling four million passenger movements in the first half of 2026 alone.
This comprised 2.2 million international and 1.8 million domestic movements, underscoring its importance in connecting Penang to regional and global markets.
Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the recognition reflected the collective efforts of the airport team and its partners, while underscoring the airport’s role in supporting Penang’s broader economic ambitions.
He highlighted the state’s dual importance as an international tourism destination and a key centre for high-value manufacturing, noting that airport connectivity and capacity must keep pace with its development.
As passenger demand grows and Penang strengthens its position in the global economy, expanding airport infrastructure has become an important part of sustaining that momentum.
The recognition therefore comes at a pivotal time, with major expansion works underway to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from 6.5 million to 12 million.
Building capacity for Penang’s next chapter
The expansion project covers the main terminal, aircraft apron and supporting infrastructure, with upgrades designed to accommodate more passengers and aircraft as demand continues to grow.
The programme also includes Malaysia’s first remote digital virtual tower, forming part of a broader infrastructure upgrade intended to support airport operations as capacity increases.
Malaysia Airports said construction is being coordinated around existing airport operations to ensure services remain available to passengers and airlines throughout the project.
Beyond accommodating more travellers, the expansion is expected to strengthen Penang’s ability to attract visitors, facilitate business travel and support international investment.
As one of Malaysia’s key electronics and semiconductor centres, the state depends on reliable global connections to sustain its manufacturing ecosystem and maintain links with international markets.
Increasing the airport’s capacity is therefore not simply an infrastructure upgrade, but an investment in the connectivity needed to support Penang’s next phase of economic development.
Growing connections to the world
The airport’s existing network provides a foundation for that growth. As of September, Penang International Airport was served by 27 airlines connecting the state to 22 destinations.
Malaysia Airports said it continues to work with airline and tourism partners to expand the route network, with additional capacity expected to create more opportunities for connectivity and give travellers greater choice.
For Penang’s tourism industry, stronger air links could improve access to the state’s cultural attractions, heritage sites, food scene and hospitality offerings.
For businesses, expanded connectivity could facilitate international engagement and reinforce Penang’s appeal as a destination for investment.
The next step will be to translate increased infrastructure capacity into sustained route growth, an improved passenger experience and broader economic opportunities for the region.
The CAPA award provides international recognition of the airport’s current performance as it prepares for this next phase.
With passenger demand growing and expansion works underway, Penang International Airport is positioning itself to play an even greater role in connecting the state to the world, supporting its industries and advancing its ambitions in tourism and high-value manufacturing.
