Motorists using the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway will face lane closures in both directions from October 12 to February 28, 2027, as construction continues on an elevated U-turn linked to the Air Itam bypass.
Developer IJM Land Bhd said the closures would affect the median-side rightmost lanes of the George Town-bound and Bayan Lepas-bound carriageways near The Light Waterfront.
The lane closures and traffic diversions are necessary to provide a safe working area for the next phase of construction, according to Bernama.
IJM Land said the initial phase of construction for the elevated U-turn was completed in early September.
Once completed, the U-turn is expected to complement the Air Itam bypass and improve road connectivity and traffic flow along the coastal expressway.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys ahead, follow directional signage and exercise caution when approaching the affected areas.
IJM Land said further updates would be provided as construction progresses.
The works form part of the wider Air Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway bypass project, an elevated four-lane dual carriageway designed to connect Air Itam to the coastal highway while allowing motorists to bypass the inner city.
As of an update reported on October 3, the bypass had reached 93% completion, with the remaining works targeted for completion by April 2027, according to Paya Terubong assemblyman Wong Hon Wai.
At the Farlim end, the deck slab had been completed, while construction continued on the parapet and reinforced earth wall near Lintang Angsana.
Road widening works along Lintang Angsana had also begun to accommodate construction of the wall and were expected to continue throughout October.
The ongoing works in the area were also expected to affect Rapid Penang bus services, as limited road space could restrict buses' ability to turn.
Rapid Penang was expected to announce any temporary route changes or alternative arrangements separately.
The elevated U-turn and bypass are intended to improve connectivity between Air Itam and the coastal expressway.
However, the lane closures will remain in place until February 28, 2027, according to the announced construction schedule.
